From Wood 2 White!

18 January 2012 11 Comments

I know that the question of whether or not to paint wood white or leave it natural always encourages a heated debate and people on both sides have strong feelings.  I hope I don’t offend any one by saying this but  I am a passionate member of team white when it comes to doors, trim and sills.  Don’t hate.  I knew that the wood door in our mudroom had to either be replaced or painted.   And because the name of the game around this place is FREE I decided to use the paint I had to give it a fresh coat (or 5) of semi-gloss white (the same paint used for the trim).  I’ll be the first to admit – I don’t love the look of painted doors.  But since the mudroom will be undergoing a more permanent renovation at the same time as the kitchen (hopefully about a year from now) we don’t really want to sink money in to it but we want to enjoy it a little more between now and then.  And I know that many of you will gasp when you see that I painted the door handle.  But leaving it almond on a bright white door just didn’t seem right to me.  It’s not a perfect solution but it’s a cleaner and brighter finish which is what I was hoping for.  Perhaps I will like it more once the walls are painted a darker colour and the trim is caulked.  Here is what it looked like before.

And here is the after shot. (the afternoon lighting around here makes everything look even more blue – if that’s possible!)

You’ll notice that the shelving seen in this post has been removed along with the awkwardly placed coat hook.  It’s getting there, slowly but surely.  And if I don’t like the way the door looks once I complete everything around it (the trim, the wall colour, the floor) I’ll start looking at other solutions.  I’m learning that you have to be flexible in this home improvement game.

It looks great! I SO don’t blame you for painting it…I have 3 or 4 doors I want to paint myself!

I would have done the same thing as you in this situation. I think that after you caulk the trim and paint a different color, it will look great! It already looks much better, so good work!!

Hey Whitney! Thanks for dropping by! Yes, the uneven trim makes it look so much worse. Must get on that asap.

Hey Ashley, Yes it is a super cheap door. And the previous owner made it worse by cutting in unevenly. We could probably spend weeks and weeks in that little room fixing all of the mistakes but knowing that it will all be torn out not far down the road makes it easier to look past things here and there. Thanks for your support on painting the door. I was afraid I was going to get blasted!

Hi Jami! Thanks for stopping by! And for your support on painting the door white. I thought everyone was going to hate it. I’m not a huge fan of it right now but once I get around to caulking the trim I’m hoping that will help.
