How Does Your Garden Grow?

19 April 2012 8 Comments

This is our first official landscaping post.  Let it be known, we have no idea what we’re doing out here. We’re totally clueless about when to plant, what to plant, how to plant and where to plant. That being said, it wouldn’t take a horticulturist to realize that our yard is in desperate need of some tender love and care. Because we’re sitting on over 3 acres of land with many garden areas we have to break our landscaping ambitions down to very manageable tasks. Otherwise, we would probably just collapse in a pile of weeds and sob. So over the past few days I’ve been focusing on one of the front flower beds. I figured it was a good place to start because it’s already boxed in (most of the others just grow in to the yard – yikes) and it’s the bed you walk past to get to the front door. The state of it was a little embarrassing. Ok, a lot embarrassing. See for yourself.April 2012 174April 2012 183April 2012 182April 2012 178April 2012 181See what I mean?  What a mess.  So, armed with my gloves and two yard waste bags I got to work clearing out anything that was either a weed (from my limited knowledge), dead (brown or dry) or not supposed to be there (fallen birds nest, sticks, garbage etc.)  And this is what I came out with.  It’s not beautiful by any stretch of the imagination but it doesn’t look completely neglected either.  Maybe just a little neglected.April 2012 002April 2012 005April 2012 010April 2012 004April 2012 006And we have our first bloom in our new house.  A daffodil.  What a pretty way to kick off the beginning of our landscaping adventures.  We haven’t even hammered out a to-do list for the yard yet but you better believe it’s long and probably overly ambitious.  Realistically, it’s going to take us years to accomplish everything we want to out here.diana

I totally understand your overwhelming feelings when it comes to landscaping! Our yard was/is a hot mess and we are taking it in little chunks so we don’t give up before we even start.

Our first task was to just clear everything out too. We didn’t even get around to planting anything in our beds until a couple days ago. For months, they were just dirt…sooooo attractive.

We also just finished round 2 of major weeding, and don’t even get me started with our backyard. It’s dirt with a field of daffodils. No grass. Just massive amounts of daffodils. SO WEIRD.

Anywhoooo…that’s our drama and we only have about half an acre!! I can’t imagine tackling 3 full acres! Good luck with it. I bet you will make it gorgeous as the years pass. :)

Nothing wrong with taking baby steps!! You did a great job cleaning that area up :) We’re overwhelmed with the wreckage going on in our yard too…sand, spanish moss, weeds, oh my!

Wow, what a difference! I’m totally clueless outside too, but right now our yard is mud, so anything will be an improvement!!

    It looks so much better!!

I’m afraid to have a yard in the future. I’m not sure how I’ll be with upkeep. Also, I have a black thumb.

Landscaping is totally overwhelming! We haven’t done much landscaping yet, but we really need to mulch and weed the multiple flower beds. You’re flower bed looks great though! Such an improvement!
