Entry Way Slow & Painful Progress

12 July 2012 12 Comments

We’re at that point in another project.  You know the point.  The point when you question why you started the project  to begin with.  The point when the before pictures look way better than the progress pictures.  The point when you start brainstorming shortcuts and quick fixes.   The point of no return.  Ripping up linoleum is the worst.  Period.  No questions asked.  It. Is. The. Worst.  And it looks like we’re going to be doing it for a while.  For those of you who don’t remember (and for my new readers – yay! so glad you’re here!) here are a few pictures of what our entry way looked like the day we moved in.

That’s a whole lot of wall paper!  I was so happy when we first got rid of all the stripes.  Now they aren’t looking too bad.  Take a look at how the entry looked when we got started on Saturday morning.  You’ll see what I mean.

We started ripping up the linoleum on Saturday morning.  The top layer came off pretty easily.  The paper and glue however are clinging to the plywood subfloor for dear life.  By Sunday evening we had made a little bit of progress and nailed down the best technique.  In case you’re wondering, what has been working for us is, soaking a small area with wallpaper stripper, scoring with a blade, steaming the area while we work on something else and coming back to it when the paper starts to bubble.  Then we scrape it off with a putty knife.  It’s time consuming to say the least.  See for yourself – below are progress photos.  I have to clarify because it’s kind of hard to tell.

Lookin’ good! That is a ton of work you guys got accomplished! We are about to start staining our hardwood floors and I’m slightly scared!

While I haven’t taken on a project quite that big before, I’ve certainly been at that “point.” It typically involves me wanting to pay someone to finish it quickly :) You’ll get there, little by little. Keep it up!

Wow. That looks like a lot of work! Yuck. Thank god we have no linoleum in our house. Keep it up!! It really does look a million times better already!

I totally understand about the “point” but you’ve done so much awesome hard work! It definitely looks better without the striped wallpaper and will be SO worth it once you’re done. I’ll be cheering you on from the sidelines! :)

Ugh, that IS the worst!! Hang in there – you know the end result will totally be worth it.

you describe that “point” so well. i remember feeling that in almost every project:). I actually think it’s looking better though! Just getting that crazy pattern of the linoleum out of there looks better already :)
