The Sister’s House–Kitchen Backsplash
I haven’t been as active on the blog in January as I thought I would have been. Truth be told, I haven’t really done much in the DIY arena since before Christmas.
Until this past weekend. I headed to my sister’s house with big backsplash laying plans! A project that neither her nor I had ever done before, but were confident we could pull of. I don’t know where this confidence came from but our instincts were right. The tile laying moved along quickly, the grouting was easier than expected and the cleaning required some elbow grease but proved to be completely manageable. How often does a project actually turn out to be easier than you expect? In my experience, not often. And the results, well, we’re pretty happy! You might remember what her kitchen looked like when she closed on the house. And if you don’t here is a horrible reminder.
And here is the same kitchen today. Can you believe this transformation? There is still some detail work to do here and there. The tile needs to be caulked around the widows and along the counter top, plans for a new table and chair set have been floating around and a new light fixture is in order. But we’re about ready to call this kitchen done! I was really only involved with picking the finishes and laying the floor the backsplash tile. The rest was my Sister and my Dad. Didn’t they do a great job!![]()

I still can’t believe she pulled this transformation off for under $3000! Talk about bang for your buck! Now it’s her turn to come and help me with my kitchen!
What have you guys been up to this month? Anyone else finding it difficult to get back in the DIY swing of things after the holidays this year? Just me?

WOWZA!!!! That is quite the tranformation…it looks amazing, and on a budget too?!?! Even better!!!
Thanks Gabbi!
Sticking to a budget is much easier when you have handy parents! I don’t have to tell you that though do I? haha.

OMG it looks awesome!! I can’t believe that price tag either. Seriously, a million times better!!!
Wow! I had to do a double take to make sure that was the same kitchen. It looks great and congrats on the tile success. My husband and I plan to do the same thing later this year.
Wow, that looks pretty good. Good job! Now you can tackle anything
Wow! That looks amazing!
Wow!! What a transformation! It looks fabulous! I can’t believe she pulled it off for $3000! Where are the cabinets from?
Thanks ladies! You’re all too kind!
Almost everything came from Home Depot. The cabinets were part of their truck load sale that comes on a few times a year. The back splash and floor tile were also from Home Depot – at clearance prices. The counter top came from Home Hardware.
I think that the bulkhead and the added trim above the cabinets really make them look more custom and less truck load! My Dad did great job building them in!
Hope that helps!
