Back Bedroom Progress Report
We’re getting there. Slowly but surely. In case you don’t remember, here is what our back bedroom looked like when we moved in two exhausting short weeks ago. Check out other pictures here.
Yikes! Removing the carpets was the first item on our to-do list in here. And after seeing the under side, we’re happy that we didn’t even attempt cleaning them. I can rest easier knowing they have already been taken to the dump. And even without flooring or paint, the room looks (and smells) much better.
In the above picture, the under pad is still stapled to the floor. In the below picture the under pad has been removed. Surprisingly, the sub floor is in pretty good shape. Which is a good thing, because we’re probably going to be living on the plywood for a while.
After the carpets were gone, we removed all of the staples that had been holding the under pad in place, along with the tack strips. Since we’re planning on living on the plywood it was important to make sure we got every staple either removed or hammered in (if they couldn’t be removed) so that we wouldn’t worry about cut feet or toe stubs. ![]()
Since this is a temporary space for us (read more about that here) I’m considering painting the subfloor once we’re a little bit more organized around here. Maybe a fun pattern like stripes or chevron? It will eventually be covered up – probably with hardwood, so why not have a little bit of fun in the mean time?
Has anyone out there painted plywood floors? Any tips, tricks or words of warning?

It looks sooo much better already! I’ve been itching to rip up the carpet in our Master BR since we moved in – something about old carpeting skeeves me out. You should definitely paint the floor something fun!!
Oh my gosh…I can’t believe the stains on the underside of that carpet! Good thing it’s long gone now! I think painting a fun pattern on the floor would do wonders for you guys while you are temporarily calling that bedroom “home”. Can’t wait to see what you decide!
Painting the plywood would be so cool!! I vote for something really wild since you’ll be covering it up later anyway.
Painting the floor will be so fun! I can’t wait to read about that! And that old carpet was disgusting! Gross!
Lindsay, I second that vote!

[...] Here it is, February already and I haven’t shared a single picture of this room after we ripped up the carpet. Shame on me. Here is a little reminder of what the room looked like before we busted [...]
[...] all over the place around here – from the living room, to the kitchen, to the basement, to the back bedroom, to the foyer. We’ve made a little bit of progress everywhere but a lot of progress nowhere. [...]
